Derrick Campbell, Guitar Teacher

I’ve been playing the guitar for twenty-eight years now, and studied with a variety of teachers including Bob Ferguson and Michael Harris. I began teaching guitar lessons when I was a sophomore at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. I graduated with a B.A. in Communications and then moved to the Boston area in 1997 and began working full time as a guitar teacher within a few months. Since then, I’ve also played in a variety of original and cover bands and written a number of songs of my own.

In 2023, I started performing with an acoustic duo called the Chip Cofone Band and have been doing 1-2 shows a month in Springfield, PA.  Later that year I began playing with a classic rock band called the Garage Bandits that plays 3-7 shows per month in the Philly suburbs and surrounding area.

In 2020, I contacted Ted Norris, the singer in an original band I was in some years back. We started collaborating on recording the songs we did back then and also wrote some new songs. He’s in Virginia, so we used Garageband projects to record the basic tracks, and then hired session drummers and mixing engineers from Airgigs.com.

As of September 2023, I have resumed doing in-person lessons and am offering private guitar lessons at Delco Guitar Studios, located at 34 Yale Avenue in Morton, PA. I am still offering lessons through Zoom, Facetime, or other video conferencing tools.

A lot of my group class students expressed an interest in taking a music theory class, so starting June 15th, I will be offering just that! This class is for anyone who wants to learn more about topics such as how chords get their names, what exactly are keys, and why should I learn scales? Although this class is geared toward guitar players, any instrumentalist is welcome to join. We’ll cover the basics such as the names of the notes, the major scale formula, and how the basic chords are constructed from the notes in the key. Feel free to contact me with any questions about the material.
This class will run for 6 sessions on Mondays at 7:30pm – 8:30 from June 15th
through July 27th. No class will be held on July 13th. The cost will be $180 for all 6 sessions, so $30 per class.
